Dear Parents—

Happy December!  Thank you to those who were able to participate in our diaper drive and first-ever vendor shopping night, both were successful events!  A tremendous thank you for all the delicious treats and foods that were provided to us during the Teacher Appreciation Holiday Brunch this week!  We are all enjoying it immensely!!  J

In the November newsletter we reviewed the value of some of the play areas in your child’s classroom.  Here are a few others to consider:

When your child cooks…

  • He learns to follow directions
  • He stimulates and uses all five senses
  • He has the opportunity to use different tools and equipment to improve small muscle coordination
  • He will use math concepts.
  • He enriches his vocabulary

When your child uses manipulatives…

  • She explores new concepts, practices emerging skills, and reinforces skills already mastered
  • She develops her fine motor skill and eye-hand coordination
  • She learns about classifying, sorting, predicting, problem solving and analyzing results
  • She has the opportunity to work independently or together with other children
  • She develops her knowledge of the world around her using real objects and concrete examples
  • She is able to be creative

When your child works with puzzles…

  • She has the opportunity to work independently or together with other children
  • She gains satisfaction in completing a puzzle and builds her self-confidence
  • She improves her eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills
  • She is able to develop her problem-solving skills

Operational Information:

 Many of you are aware but for those who are not, Meg McNamara, one of our Ladybug teachers, is moving to Atlanta, Georgia later this month. Her last day at CoF will be Friday, December 14th.  Please join me in wishing Meg the very best in her future endeavors!  She will certainly be missed by all of us!!

  • LOST & FOUND—yes we now have a lost & found container. It is located in the lobby just under the wooden bench.  If you are missing something, take a look.  Please help us minimize how much is added to lost & found by labeling all items brought to school.  Thank you!
  • SCHOOL CLOSURE POLICY FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER—yes, it is time to think about it! Weather (like the play on words?) you like snow or not, it is a coming! Here is a reminder of our snow closing policy:

 Circle of Friends 9 Month Morning Preschool Program is determined by the Framingham Public School System.  If the public schools are closed, then the Circle of Friends 9 Month Morning Preschool Program and the Extended Day Program will be closed.

The snow closing policy for all other students in the preschool and children’s center is determined by the severity of the storm. We will always do our best to open, however, in the event of severe weather conditions, we may determine it necessary to close for the day or delay our opening.  If there is a delay or closure, an email will be sent to parents and updated information will be left on the school’s voicemail by 6:00AM.  If we are in session during a severe storm, Circle of Friends staff will e-mail/call parents if an early dismissal is necessary.

The building will be closed for any State of Emergency, for example: hurricanes, tornadoes, extreme weather, public safety emergencies as well as building emergencies which would create an unsafe environment for children.

  • ILLNESSES—unfortunately we are entering the time of the year where illnesses are on the rise. Please take a minute to review our Health Care Policy:

We appreciate you keeping your child home if you have doubts about his or her health. When a child feels ill, his or her day is difficult and other children may be exposed to illness. In general, children who are lethargic and unable to participate actively in the full regular program including outdoor play will not be allowed to remain at the school. If your child will not be attending school due to illness, please call the school or email Sarah, Ivana or Laura to let us know.

If a child becomes ill in school, we will telephone you to pick him or her up. Children must be fever free for 24 hours and un-medicated before they return to school.  Under no circumstances should they return to school the next day following an illness. A temperature of 100 degrees or above is considered a fever. This rule also applies to children who have vomited, had diarrhea, or a contagious condition of any kind, including, but not limited to strep, flu, respiratory infection, conjunctivitis, infectious rash, hepatitis, chicken pox, measles, mumps, scabies, lice, etc.  A physician’s note indicating that the child is able to return to group care setting may be required for some illnesses.

Please be sure to let us know if your child developed an illness over the weekend or days he or she was not in school.

 December Closings–

  • We will be closed for all children Monday, December 24th, Tuesday, December 25th, Monday, December 31st & Tuesday, January 1st.
  • Our 9 month Morning only and extended day Preschool will be closed from Monday, December 24th through Tuesday, January 1st. We will welcome everyone back on Wednesday, January 2nd!
  • If you know of days that your child will not be attending school in the upcoming weeks around the holidays, please let us know. Thank you!

From the Parent Board…

The holidays are upon us!  Whatever your traditions, this is a crazy, festive, BUSY time of year.  And as I’m sure you’ve noticed, it has been busy around school as well!  In our November board meeting, we got an update from our financial advisor (things are looking good), heard more about the process for the NAEYC accreditation renewal (loads of work), and learned about how some of the new high school assistants and the new music teachers are doing (great!).  Since November is an election month, we tackled the topic of the need to separate politics from our nonprofit school status, and what that means for board members.  And as always, we spent lots of time planning the various events and fundraisers the school has been hosting.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by our vendor fair night, donated to our diaper drive, and contributed to our teacher appreciation brunch – what a great school community we have!  Our December meeting is cancelled so that board members can focus on everything else going on during this busy month.  Enjoy the time with your families, and we hope to see you at the next board meeting which will be held on Thursday, January 10th at 7pm in the playspace!
