Weeks of April 1 and 8

We spent the last few weeks finishing up our unit on bugs.  We talked about caterpillars turning into butterflies.  We also talked about dragonflies, crickets, click beetles and fireflies.  The Books we read were The Hungry Caterpillar, The Goodnight Caterpillar, Cozy Caterpillars, Butterfly Garden, Butterflies, Dazzling Dragonflies, Stick, The Clumsy Click Beetle, The Very Quiet Cricket, and The Very Lonely Firefly.

We practiced writing our names by making name caterpillars.  The Owls counted out how many circles for their name and glued them together to make a caterpillar.  They then wrote each letter of their name on a different circle.  We hung them up on out tree bulletin board to make it look like spring!  We also enjoyed painting a butterfly shape with watercolors.  The colors came out beautiful.

We had fun learning about patterns and strung beads on pipe cleaner that we made into dragonflies.  We had some simple patterns with the beads as well as some very complex patterns.  Some Owls just enjoyed picking out their favorite colors.  The end results were some very colorful dragonflies!

Our final bug project was a make your own bug activity.  We put out a variety of shapes in a variety of colors and told the Owls to make whatever bugs they wanted.  They could be real or imaginary.  After making the bug, they named it and told us a bit about what the bug eats and where it lives.  We had some very creative ideas!

BREAKFAST: Our breakfast invitations went home.  They looked like a giant colorful owl.  On the back are instructions on how to RSVP to the breakfast.  The date is Friday May10 at 9:15am.  One guest is invited per child and the guest must be over 18.  Please RSVP as son as you know who is coming.

CONFERENCES: Conferences start this week.  If you have not yet confirmed your time, please do so as soon as you can.  If you need to change the time, let me know.  I am pretty flexible in the mornings if I have enough notice and we can even extend into the following week if needed.

MYSTERY READER: We have enjoyed a few mystery readers so far and are looking forward to a few more already scheduled.  I will be reaching out to schedule some more.  The end of school goes by fast and we want to be sure everyone gets a turn!
